What is Isla Del Coco, Costa Rica?

    July 11th, 2013

2013-07-12_14h52_51Whether you’ve heard of it or not, Isla Del Coco, Costa Rica is a spot much loved by vacationers—at least by those who’ve heard of it. See, unlike most of the tourist-friendly islands in Costa Rica, this one isn’t filled with natives who live there year-round. No, it’s just the opposite. No one lives in Isla Del Coco, but that doesn’t stop people from flocking there during the day.

In fact, Isla Del Coco is quickly becoming one of the hottest “secret’ tourist spots in CostaRica. There’s so much to do and see on the island, so you’ll definitely want to make visiting it a part of your vacation.
A Diving Experience Like No Other
Hands down, the main reason that most people come to Isla Del Coco is for the diving! While you can dive at many locations in and around Costa Rica, no other spot offers you more opportunities to get up close and personal with some of the most majestic of all underwater creatures. You’re practically guaranteed to see hammerhead sharks, white-tipped sharks, and whale sharks, in addition to manta rays, sailfish, pilot whales, dolphins, and more! Oh, and the coral reefs you’ll find there are pretty impressive too!
    Coco Island National Park
Perfect for that after-dive downtime or as a fun day trip in and of itself, a visit to Coco Island National Park is always in order! The “park” experience is really more about taking in nature and the great outdoors than it is about doing traditional park activities, but when that great outdoors includes a gorgeous, majestic, tropical rainforest, you can’t really go wrong. This is a great spot for taking in the unique beauty of Costa Rica and can also provide some wonderful photo-ops. Bring the whole family or your best pals or even go on a romantic couple’s stroll.
    Birds Galore!
Are you a fan of birds? If you’d like the chance to see some beautiful birds in their natural habitats, then Isla Del Coco is for you! The island is actually home to several different varieties of bird, including the illustrious Coco Island cuckoo, finches, as well as flycatchers, Holy Spirit birds, and boobies. This isn’t the kind of place where you’ll pose with a parrot on your hand or shoulder, however; it’s the kind of place where you go if you truly respect wildlife and want to watch it without harming or disturbing the animals in any way.
    Pretty Plants
While you’re searching for glimpses of brilliant birds, why not keep your eyes peeled for pretty plants as well? The island is known for having beautiful tropical flowers, many different types of fauna, and other intriguing and beautiful specimens of plant life. Pose with the prettiest flower you can find and get a great photo or just go on a leisurely plant walk to relax and get away from it all. Vacationing can often be stressful, especially if you’re trying to fit a lot into your trip, but you can think of Isla Del Coco as a vacation from your vacation.
    Planning Your Trip
When possible, you’ll want to plan your trip to Isla Del Coco in advance. You’ll have to arrange for transportation to the island, and booking it ahead of time will ensure that you don’t end up disappointed and unable to carry out your plans. You can make the trek to the island cheaply by taking a boat ride or, if you’re in a hurry, you can get there by plane. You should always be mindful of the island and water conditions, since these can affect the safety of your dive or your overall trip to the island. Keep that in mind, and above all else, have fun exploring this beautiful island!
